How To Eat Healthy On A Budget
Many American want to improve their health and fitness level. Lifestyle changes can be tough, especially for working professionals. How do you really find time to make healthy meals? And, isn’t it expensive to buy healthy ingredients? Don’t worry, there’s a way around that! Here’s how to eat healthy on a budget:
Plan Your Meals
Sometimes the reason why we end up eating out or think we have to buy more groceries is because we just don’t take the time to think about our meals. You’d be surprised how many different, yummy, and healthy meals you could whip up if you only planned them! All you really need is one day a week where you can prep and cook your meals for the following week. Take large portions of meat, different veggies, and some healthy carbs. Cook them each in different ways, or with different herbs and spices. Put each meal in a plastic container and store it in the refrigerator for you to grab and go quickly! Bet you’ll be surprised what yummy recipes you can come up with!
Stick To A Grocery List
Maybe you really aren’t buying the right groceries - because you didn’t plan before you went to the store! Look up some healthy dish ideas you’d love to try, and make a grocery list for the week. Stick to it! If you find yourself tempted to buy unhealthy foods, just try to steer clear of those areas of the store. Also, there are some great grocery store apps that will help you find popular, healthy items - plus, they’ll probably provide coupons!
Plan Your “Cheat” Meals
Healthy eating doesn’t mean depriving yourself! On the contrary, it just means making sure you get good nutrition, energy, and you don’t overdo it! Instead of buying tons of unhealthy snacks that you mindlessly munch on, plan your “cheat” meals. Maybe you have a favorite dessert that you can save for Friday night. Or maybe you can find a great chocolate bar alternative in a cocoa-flavored granola bar. Also, if you do want to try that fancy restaurant, go ahead! Look at the menu ahead of time so you won’t be tempted to eat the first unhealthy dish that you look at. Or alternatively, plan to eat that unhealthy dish as a satiWhatever it is, plan your cheat meal. Let it satisfy your sweet or savory tooth. Otherwise, you may end up eating unhealthy if you don’t!
Buy Frozen or In Bulk
Love to make smoothies? Buy some frozen fruits and veggies that you can store for weeks at a time. It sure is more cost-effective than fresh fruits that start to rot in a week. Checkout the healthy section of the frozen dinner aisle. There are tons of options that you can just keep stored in your fridge for a day when you don’t feel like cooking! Can you stock up on items that don’t need to be refrigerated? Oats, brown rice, beans, etc. are all great healthy options that you don’t need to keep buying weekly!
